Police have recovered firearms and impounded a Toyota Corolla vehicle registration number UAD 728Y that is believed to have been used in several armed robberies in Mukono district. This follows a spate of robberies in the district.

The latest robbery took place over the weekend at Spice supermarket at the Kampala-Jinja-Bugerere road junction in Mukono Municipality. Luke Oweyesigyire, the Kampala Metropolitan Deputy Police Spokesperson, says that police have been able to recover a sub-machine gun loaded with three live ammunition as well as impound a car at the Ham Mukasa-Nasuuti junction connected to the robberies.

He notes that upon searching the vehicle, detectives recovered other exhibits including two backpacks with one containing sharp pangas, yellow polythene bags, sharp steel knives, two pairs of scissors, and screwdrivers. He also says that the detectives recovered one joint bolt cutter, a master key for vehicle ignition, two pieces of hooking wires, television remotes, and a wireless microphone.

These exhibits are suspected to have been used in various robberies and the subsequent attacks reported by many victims at Mukono police division headquarters and other police posts. Investigations are still ongoing with several arrests made. Several details will be availed later,” Oweyesigyire notes.

On Friday night last week, three robbers armed with AK47s attacked Spice supermarket where they shot a cashier, Irene Nakandi in the back and took off with an unspecified amount of money. Oweyesigyire, says that most of the suspects in the custody of Mukono are connected to various crimes including the robbery at the spice supermarket.

On Monday, Police Spokesperson, Fred Enanga confirmed the arrest of two suspects including William Mugalu 24, and Sam Mbogo 23, both residents of Nasuuti in Mukono Municipality. Reliable police sources show that four suspects were arrested during the process of recovering the gun and impounding the vehicle. Karim Lutaaya, a resident of Mukono has called for heightened patrols and roadblocks to ending such robberies.
