13 lawmakers from the ruling party and two in opposition have announced their bid to contest for Speaker of Parliament after the passing of Rt Hon Jacob Oulanyah.
Oulanyah died Sunday morning from Washington Medical Center.
Because the law stipulates that no business can be conducted on the floor of Parliament in the absence of Speaker, government has fixed Friday to elect new Speaker.
This means the new Speaker will preside over the session of paying tribute to Oulanyah in Parliament.
The NRM through its Electoral Chairman Dr Tanga Odoi set Tuesday to receive credentials of members who want to join the race.
The deputy Speaker Rt Hon Anita Among was the first to declare her bid and she has since been followed by more 12 NRM lawmakers.
Only two emerged from opposition that intend to vie for the legislature’s top job.
The Forum for Democratic Change (FDC) spokesperson Hon Ssemujju Ibrahim and Asuman Basalirwa, the President of JEEMA.
