Rt Hon Robinah Nabbanja , the Prime Minister of Uganda has reacted to the ‘unbecoming’ conduct the Minister of Relief, Disaster Preparedness and Refugees, Hilary Onek displayed in a letter apparently officially addressed to the Prime Minister.
In the letter, Onek expressed his disappointment in the work ethic of Nabbanja which he claimed rendered his docket irrelevant and hence he threatened to resign.
The letter made rounds on social media sparking off a reaction from the Prime Minister.
In her defence, speaking to journalists at Parliament on Tuesday Nabbanja said she had not received the letter and found it disturbing and showing a lack of discipline on the Minister’s part.
While he complained of her usurping his authority, she said she didn’t tolerate laziness.
“This is quite evident by the way you have been calling for meetings, going to disaster affected places and visiting refugee settlements without informing either my office or that of my deputy.to my shock, my staff who I supervise are the ones being called for the meetings and not the line ministers,” the letter partly read.
“I have not received the letter. I want members to appreciate that we are changing the mode of how we operate…If the Minister (for Relief, Disaster Preparedness, Hilary Onek) decided to address me through social media then that’s different; he’s indisciplined but I have not seen the letter. Maybe he was still formulating it,” the Prime Minister said.
She added that, “my office and his are near each other. We have had a number of meetings and sometimes he doesn’t attend. I told you on the onset of my term of office that we shall not allow laziness. Let me wait for the Minister’s letter and I will reply.”
