Following President Yoweri Museveni’s COVID-19 address in which he announced tougher measures to combat the resurgence of Covid-19 across the country, travellers have since rushed to leave Kampala.
Kampala and Wakiso have been flagged as the epicenters of the new Covid-19 variants which are ravaging the city and neighbouring towns.
For three days in a row, the Ministry of Health has registered over 4000 cases and 9 deaths.
As a result, the President imposed a 42-day partial lockdown.
Museveni suspended inter-district travel, closed schools and higher institutions of learning, suspended public gatherings and rural markets.
He further said private cars must have three occupants including the driver.
Against that background, some transport companies have issued notices that they will suspend operation from June 10 until 42 days elapse.
In Kampala many travellers have filled up bus parks with luggages to leave the city.
The President threatened to impose a full lockdown should the population fail to comply with the new measures.
The movement of people from Kampala to upcountry has already aroused panic considering that the city and its neighboring towns have registered highest number of Covid cases in the new wave.
Demographics displayed by the President indicated that there are fewer or no cases upcountry.
Bus companies have also hiked transport fares as parents rush to pick their children from school.
Museveni said some measures he announced are taking immediate effect while others would will be effected on June 10.
