Germany warns NUP against Extremism as Chancellor Merkel congratulates Museveni ahead of Swearing in

Merkel and Museveni have known each other for quite some time. This picture was taken back in June 2007 in Berlin.

Germany’s Federal Chancellor Angela Merkel has extended her congratulatory message to President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni for his reelection, two days to swearing in.

Museveni will receive instruments of power and take oath of office on May 12 at Independence Grounds- Kololo.

The event, according to State House will be attended by over 12 Heads of States and thousands of powerful diplomats from all nooks and crevice of the world.

“Dear Mr. President,

I would like to congratulate you on your reelection as President of the Republic of Uganda.

Your new term in office is an opportunity to continue advancing the democratic and economic development of your country and strengthening the rule of law in the interests of all Ugandans,” part of Merkel’s message posted on Facebook reads.

She added; “Germany remains a willing partner to your country as you continue down this path.

I wish you strength and a sure hand for the tasks that now lie ahead.”

The message which was posted by Germany Embassy attracted response from errant members of the opposition resulting into a fierce cyber exchange between NUP members and the Mission.

The Embassy reminded the radical wing that hate speech is not an opinion.

“Hello followers. We are getting a lot of criticism for this post. That’s ok, we respect and tolerate freedom of speech in Germany. But we don’t tolerate hate speech. Hate is not an opinion. We expect our users to use common courtesy in their comments. If you use offensive or threatening language, we will delete your comment and/or block you from our page,” the message from the Embassy reads.
