President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni has Thursday promised to offer an extensive lecture to new NRM legislators on how to sustain themselves in leadership for quite a long time.
The President made the remarks while opening the NRM retreat in Kyankwanzi which takes place after every general election, as the party seeks to indoctrinate its elected lawmakers on its ideology before they take over their offices.
The NRM Chairman has been in power for 35 years and was on January 14 re-elected to rule for more 5 years.
Addressing the visibly excited unsworn in MPs, Museveni opened his remarks saying the retreat will hinge on “why should someone be in leadership beyond his household.”
“And after being in leadership, how do you manage to in that leadership overtime,” he added.
“How do you become a perennial leader?” he said.
Museveni gave examples of previous Presidents, Apollo Milton Obote, Edward Mutesa, Iddi Amin among others as young leaders who failed to consolidate themselves in power.
“I sometime see people referring to someone as eyaliiko (former),” Museveni made a veiled statement saying those former President however much they were young, they didn’t know what do to sustain themselves in power for long time.
Museveni together with his NRA combatants took over power in 1986 having fought to liberate the country for 5 years.
He told the new MPs that he will strongly fight the habit of foreign travels which depletes the economy.
He cited the Late Tanzanian leader John Magufuli as having succeeded in fighting this bad habit and saving billions of money to run the economy.
