A team of 13 legal officers from Muwema and Company Advocates has volunteered to represent three city journalists who were dragged to Court by IGP Kale Kayihura for publishing stories related to the death of AIGP Andrew Felix Kaweesi.
The three scribes are Giles Muhame, Editor in Chief at Chimpreports.com, Stanley Ndawula of The Investigator and Dixon Kagurusi Managing Editor of The Ugandan.
The Attorney General William Byaruhanga, Kayihura petitioned Court for orders barring the these journalists and their media houses from further publication of any such news in as far AIG Kaweesi’s death is concerned till security investigations are completed.
Today, the High Court ruled issued an interim injunction stopping the three online news sites from publishing any content on the investigations into the murder of Kaweesi until the main application is disposed off.
In his affidavit he swore yesterday, the embattled police chief said that continuous publication of these stories includes confidential internal correspondence amongst security agencies on the murder investigations of AIGP Kaweesi and that it is injurious to the ongoing investigations and more so bound to jeopardize the security of Uganda.
Counsel Robert Friday Kagoro one of the lawyers from Muwema’s chambers told TrumpetNews that they felt it is unconstitutional for Court to gag the media.
“The way these people were served was illegitimate. They served them late and were not represented,” he said on phone.
Kagoro added that since Kayihura swore an affidavit, “we will apply to court to have him appear for cross examination.”
He said that they are drafting an application asking Court to dismiss the application.
These journalists are expected to file their defence within 14 days.
Police’s silence on the progress of Kaweesi murder probe has drawn ire from members of the public.
Counsel Muwema is considered one of the best legal minds in the land. He has represented prominent Ugandans including Ex Premier Amama Mbabazi.
