Forum for Democratic Change (FDC) supporters are engaging police in running battles in the ongoing Kamuli Municipality MP by-election.
FDC candidate Salaam Musumba who cast her vote moments ago, told TrumpetNews that police and Electoral Commission (EC) are shielding NRM officials who are reportedly bribing voters.
“But I can assure you that I will sort them out,” she said.
The errant opposition fans have descended on unidentified police officer and thumped him to pulp accusing him of protecting the RDC s of Bulambuli and Kamuli who are circulating money.
“So far the reports I have indicate that Electoral Commission has failed its work and has decided to handle over the exercise to Uganda Police,” Salaam added.
Three people including a police officer and FDC supporters who are yet to be identified have reportedly been injured and admitted to hospital.
At Nakulyaku polling station, Mr Siraj Kalende, one of the agents of Ms Salaam Musumba of FDC was allegedly blocked by the ruling National Resistance Movement (NRM) supporters and beaten up. He said he had reported the case to police.
Confrontations between the two camps have also been reported at several other polling stations.
There were also allegations that mobilisers of respective candidates, including local leaders were moving from home to home distributing money and other items to voters. We could not independently verify this claim.
Although five candidates are participating in the contest, the fight is between two political honchos- Salaam Musumba and Remema Watongola of NRM.
The by-election came as s result of Court’s ruling nullifying the election of NRM candidate due to lack of academic credentials.
The entire EC team led by Chairman Simon Byabakama has pitched camp in the area and has warned candidates and voters against fuelling violence.
Other candidates in the race include; Prossy Naikoba, Samuel Walujo and Michael Kiboome on independent ticket.
