The Director General of Health Services Dr Henry Mwebesa has said two police officers from Uganda police manning Malaba border recorded on video allowing truck drivers entering Uganda have been traced and arrested.
They have since been isolated waiting to face criminal charges of soliciting money.
“This is being handled with together Uganda Police. The officers were arrested and further action will be taken. All officers at border points of entry are also tasked to take appropriate protective measures when handling cargo transporters,” Mwebase announced on his official Twitter Page.
A video clip which circulated online captured two police officers stopping trucks from Kenya and later allowing them to proceed after receiving money from them.
In the clip, they are accused of picking money from the truck drivers.
The person who is believed to have captured the clip is heard saying that touching each truck is the reason many transit truck drivers have of late tested positive for coronavirus. He said the officers who touch the doors carry the virus from one truck to another.
More than 10 truck drivers from Kenya and Tanzania transiting through or destined for Uganda have been found positive for the virus.
The suspects are attached to Malaba Border station. A source in the Uganda Police has identified the officers as PC Muwoya Fred and PC Masereka Steven.
He says the officers have denied having picked money and insist that were checking whether the trucks carried passengers as it has been the habit of truck drivers.
This news website understands that samples have since been taken from the detained officers who are currently under isolation, to test them for COVID-19.
