A local Defence Unit (LDU) operative has been shot and killed by a colleague in a scuffle that erupted during an operation at Kisekka Market in downtown, Kampala on Tuesday evening.
According to a witness, the two armed men reportedly shot at each other and one died instantly.
Uganda People’s Defence Forces (UPDF) which oversees LDU as a reserve force has since taken up the matter for investigations.
The Force’s publicist Maj. Umar Katamba confirmed the death but didn’t reveals the identities of both the shooter and the deceased.
Maj. Katamba told the media that their officers were conducting an operation in Kisekka Market before they shot themselves following a protracted argument around 7:30pm.
The shooter was rushed to Mulago Hospital but remains in critical condition.
The LDUs remain a threat to the public for recklessly manhandling civilians sometimes shooting and killing them. Several cases have been registered countrywide involving LDUs misusing guns.
Before President Museveni directed for the resumption of this supportive force in curbing crime last year, it had been previously dissolved as a mastermind of criminality in the country.
