Mak Strike Escalates; Staff Member Enters Meeting with Pistol

Makerere staff in a meeting

In a joint emergency assembly sitting held at the University main Hall yesterday, 11th February 2019, staff from all three associations; Makerere University Academic Staff Association (MAUSA), Makerere Administrative Staff Association (MASA) and National Union on Education Institutions (NUEI), it was resolved that the strike shall not come to an end until the demand for lifting of the suspension of their leaders is dealt with by Thursday 14th.

In the sitting, some members of the Association and the Union were nominated to work with the joint executives of the Associations and the union. It was agreed that every staff apart from security and university hospital staff shall not go on with their daily duties.

Meanwhile as the meeting went on, one member Amos Ddembe attached to college of Health Sciences was cited with a pistol and this caused more commotion as police tried to disarm him in order for the meeting to proceed.

The Head of department of Journalism and Communication, DR William Tayebwa called upon the vice chancellor, Prof Barnabas Nawangwe to respect the staff plea and withdraw the suspension of their colleagues as this is doing a disservice to students who reported weeks back and have not received any lectures.

He said “Kamunyu was suspended as a lecturer yet what we see is that he was suspended due to the issues he was articulating as chair MUASA. So we appeal to the Vice Chancellor to follow the resolutions of the academic leaders and the various committees to lift the suspension of our association leaders “
