The Uganda People’s Defence Forces (UPDF) has announced a key leadership change in its Land Forces following the passing of Major General Francis Takirwa.
The Chief of Defence Forces (CDF) and Senior Presidential Advisor for Special Operations, General Muhoozi Kainerugaba, has promoted Brigadier General Joseph Musoke Ssemwanga to the rank of Major General and appointed him as the new Deputy Commander of the UPDF Land Forces. The promotion and appointment took effect in December 2025, following Major General Takirwa’s illness.
Major General Ssemwanga brings extensive operational experience to his new role. Until recently, he served as the Contingent Commander of UPDF troops deployed under the African Union Support and Stabilization Mission in Somalia (AUSSOM), where he oversaw regional peacekeeping and stabilization efforts.
Before his deployment to Somalia towards the end of 2024, Ssemwanga commanded the 1st Infantry Division, headquartered at Kakiri in Wakiso District. His leadership in both domestic and international military operations is expected to strengthen the operational readiness and strategic direction of the UPDF Land Forces.
The late Major General Takirwa, whom Ssemwanga replaces, passed away on Saturday morning after a period of illness. His contributions to the UPDF, particularly in leadership and operational planning, were widely recognized within the military.
The Ministry of Defence and Veteran Affairs (MODVA) expressed condolences to Major General Takirwa’s family, friends, and colleagues, while welcoming Major General Ssemwanga into his new role. Colonel Chris Magezi, Acting Director of Defence Public Information, described the appointment as part of the UPDF’s ongoing efforts to maintain continuity and operational effectiveness at all levels of command.
As Deputy Commander, Major General Ssemwanga is expected to play a pivotal role in overseeing land operations, troop readiness, and coordination with both national and regional security initiatives.
