NRM candidate Dedan Mubangizi has won of the Buwekula South parliamentary race following a court-ordered vote recount conducted at the Mubende Magistrate’s Court.
The final recount results show that Mubangizi secured 7,944 votes, defeating independent candidate Fred Tumwesigye, who polled 7,557 votes.
The recount, which began on Tuesday evening and ran through the night into Wednesday afternoon, was ordered after Mubangizi successfully petitioned court challenging Tumwesigye’s initial declaration as winner of the January 15 election.
Mubangizi had cited irregularities during the tallying process at several polling stations.
Court officials confirmed that the recount was conducted under strict judicial supervision, with Electoral Commission officials and agents from all parties present throughout the exercise.
Following the conclusion of the recount, the court overturned the earlier results announced by the Electoral Commission and directed that Mubangizi be declared the duly elected Member of Parliament for Buwekula South.
Security was reinforced at the court premises as the final outcome was announced, bringing to an end days of political tension and uncertainty in the constituency.
The Buwekula South recount has become one of the most high-profile election disputes arising from the 2026 general elections, highlighting the pivotal role of the courts in resolving electoral contests.
With the final declaration made, the Electoral Commission is expected to proceed with the gazetting of Mubangizi as the elected legislator for Buwekula South.
