Victoria University unveils New Postgraduate Diploma to Curb Uganda’s worsening Skills gap

Victoria University

Victoria University has launched a revamped Postgraduate Diploma in Higher Education, a programme designed to address Uganda’s persistent skills shortage and improve the competitiveness of graduates entering today’s rapidly changing job market. The university says the new course is a direct response to increasing concerns from employers about gaps in managerial abilities, customer-care competence, digital literacy, and entrepreneurial thinking among job seekers.

According to the institution, global trends indicate that postgraduate education is becoming more valuable, with enrolment rising by over 20% and graduates earning significantly higher wages than those with only bachelor’s degrees. Victoria University aims to align with these trends by offering a programme that emphasises practical training, industry-ready exposure, and modern teaching approaches suited for both education professionals and corporate trainers.

University officials noted that many employers in Uganda continue to cite limited soft skills, weak problem-solving abilities, and insufficient digital competence as key barriers to productivity. The newly introduced diploma is therefore structured to produce well-rounded graduates who can thrive in modern classrooms, leadership roles, and corporate environments. It also forms part of the university’s broader ambition to promote experiential learning and produce job creators rather than job seekers.

The launch comes at a time when the institution is implementing a bold strategic plan aimed at transforming its learning model through technology integration, field-based training, and curriculum redesign. This programme is expected to complement earlier initiatives such as certificate-level and TVET-oriented courses, which were introduced to offer practical skills for Uganda’s youthful workforce.

Victoria University has now opened enrollment for the new intake, encouraging graduates and professionals seeking to enhance their competencies to apply. The institution believes that this postgraduate diploma will play a significant role in bridging Uganda’s skills gap and strengthening the country’s long-term human-capital development.
