MTN Uganda has reinforced its position as one of the country’s most reliable engines of economic growth after being honoured by the Uganda Revenue Authority (URA) as the highest revenue contributor over the past three financial years.
The telecom giant received the Highest Revenue Contribution Excel Award during URA’s Annual Thanksgiving Day at the authority’s headquarters in Kampala, a ceremony held to celebrate exceptional tax compliance and transformative partnerships that advance national development.
The award recognizes MTN’s remarkable contribution of UGX 2.47 trillion in taxes between FY 2022/23 and 2024/25, making it Uganda’s single largest taxpayer.
This achievement is rooted in the company’s sustained operational excellence, consistent growth, and strategic investments that have enabled it to serve more than 22.8 million subscribers across the country.
Through mobile communications, data services, mobile financial technologies, and business solutions, MTN continues to play a central role in connecting communities, empowering enterprises, and supporting Uganda’s broader economic agenda.
MTN Uganda CEO Sylvia Mulinge said the recognition from URA affirms the company’s unwavering commitment to supporting Uganda’s development journey. She noted that MTN’s operational strategy aligns closely with the nation’s ambitions under the 10x growth vision and the drive to attain upper middle-income status by 2040.
Mulinge highlighted the urgency of strengthening domestic resource mobilization to accelerate infrastructure, education, and healthcare development, reaffirming MTN’s dedication to playing its part in expanding Uganda’s tax base through transparent and ethical business operations.
The Uganda Revenue Authority’s Commissioner General, John Musinguzi Rujoki, commended MTN for its consistency and reliability as a top taxpayer.
He revealed that the authority collected UGX 31.6 trillion in the previous financial year against a target of UGX 31.3 trillion, representing a 16.8 percent growth rate. Over the past five years, URA’s collections have nearly doubled, reflecting strong improvements in compliance, automation, and partnerships with major contributors such as MTN Uganda. Rujoki, however, noted that domestic revenues still meet only half of Uganda’s national budget, underscoring the importance of companies that go above and beyond in fulfilling their tax obligations.
MTN’s strong financial performance over the years has been driven by sustained growth across strategic business units, including mobile data, mobile money, enterprise solutions, and digital services. The company has invested heavily in expanding its network, improving service delivery, and widening digital inclusion across rural and urban communities.
These efforts have translated into rising subscriber numbers, increasing adoption of digital services, and growing revenue streams all of which contribute significantly to Uganda’s taxation capacity.
The telecom’s infrastructure expansion continues to support national priorities by enhancing connectivity, boosting digital literacy, empowering entrepreneurs, and enabling modern service delivery in key sectors such as banking, education, health, and commerce.
As MTN deepens its nationwide 4G and 5G footprint, its direct and indirect contribution to Uganda’s socio-economic transformation becomes more visible.
URA’s recognition serves as a testament to MTN Uganda’s role as a dependable partner in the country’s progress.
As the government intensifies efforts to strengthen domestic financing and reduce dependency on external borrowing, committed corporate citizens like MTN are essential in sustaining economic growth, supporting service delivery, and advancing Uganda’s development aspirations.
