The Executive Director and Chief Statistician of Uganda, Dr. Chris N. Mukiza, was among the senior government officials who welcomed President Yoweri Museveni as he began his campaign rallies in the Kigezi Sub-region on Monday afternoon.
Speaking to the media shortly after the President’s arrival, Dr. Mukiza highlighted crucial demographic and socio-economic findings for Kisoro District, drawn from the National Population and Housing Census 2024 Final Report. He revealed that the district’s population stands at 433,662 people.
According to the census data, 85,092 residents aged 10 years and above own mobile phones, while 8,840 in the same age group use the Internet figures Dr. Mukiza said point to improving digital access in the region.
On household welfare, he noted significant progress in public health indicators:
73,427 households own at least one mosquito net, strengthening malaria prevention.
62,142 households have access to improved water sources.
27,513 households have access to improved sanitation facilities.
Energy access has also improved, with 27,264 households connected to grid electricity and 18,357 households relying on solar energy a sign of growing adoption of both conventional and renewable power solutions.
Despite these gains, Dr. Mukiza stressed the urgent need for the government to prioritize upgrading the district’s road network. Better transport infrastructure, he said, is critical for unlocking Kisoro’s vast tourism opportunities.
He pointed out that Kisoro is home to world-renowned natural attractions, including the mountain gorillas, scenic crater lakes, and other unique ecological features. With improved roads, these assets could attract more tourists, boosting both the local economy and the country’s overall revenue.
Dr. Mukiza concluded that while Kisoro’s development indicators show steady progress across key sectors, targeted investment in infrastructure will be essential to realizing the district’s full socio-economic potential.
