National Unity Platform (NUP) deputy spokesperson Alex Waiswa Mufumbiro has sensationally accused his political rival, Michael Kabaziguruka, of being behind his recent arrest.
While appearing at Kawempe Chief Magistrates Court on Wednesday, Mufumbiro alleged that Kabaziguruka, his opponent in Nakawa East, is not a genuine opposition figure but a “state operative” who has long worked undercover to undermine opposition activities.
“This arrest was not just about the charges they are fabricating. The hand behind it is none other than Kabaziguruka. He has been a state operative operating within the opposition for many years,” Mufumbiro told media.
Kabaziguruka, a former Forum for Democratic Change (FDC) legislator for Nakawa East, has himself faced numerous legal battles with the state.
He was arrested several times on treason-related charges and accused of conspiring with serving army officers to overthrow the government.

In 2016, he was remanded to Kigo Prison alongside over 20 others on similar accusations.
Throughout his career, Kabaziguruka has insisted that his prosecution was politically motivated and that, as a civilian, he should never have been tried in military courts.
His petitions in the Constitutional Court later set a precedent when justices ruled that civilians cannot be subjected to trial by the General Court Martial.
Despite this history, Mufumbiro maintains that Kabaziguruka is a trusted confidant of the state who infiltrated opposition circles, including FDC where he was once close to Dr. Kizza Besigye.
