The manhunt for Hillary Byaruhanga, the security guard accused of killing Kampala businessman Anthony Mutinisa, has ended in an arrest.
Byaruhanga, attached to Don World Security Limited, has been captured on Monday evening in Kihihi, Kanungu District, western Uganda, as he attempted to cross into the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC).
According to top police sources, Byaruhanga was arrested alongside Mark Akampa, a driver employed by Mutinisa Motors, the deceased’s company.
The suspects were immediately placed under custody and, by press time, were being transported to Kampala to face the law.
Police spokespersons could not be reached for an official statement, but investigators confirmed the breakthrough.
Mutinisa, the proprietor of luxury car hire firm Mutinisa Motors Uganda, was fatally shot at his office on Martyrs Way in Ntinda on Sunday evening. Kampala Metropolitan deputy police spokesperson Luke Owoyesigyire earlier identified Byaruhanga as the prime suspect.
Scene investigations revealed evidence of a scuffle: curtains torn down, the businessman’s body found near a bathroom, suggesting he tried to flee and hide before being gunned down.
Byaruhanga fled with an unspecified sum of money and Mutinisa’s latest Toyota Land Cruiser V8 SUV, after allegedly tampering with CCTV footage to conceal evidence. The SUV was later found abandoned in Kambuga, Kanungu District.
Colleagues say Byaruhanga had worked with the company for years, drawing not only a salary from Don World Security but also a second one from Mutinisa himself. He had been entrusted with errands, taught how to drive, and enjoyed unusual access to the businessman’s affairs.
Shockingly, after the killing, he sent text messages to company staff and his supervisor saying only: “Something bad has happened.”
