A tragic incident of inmate-on-inmate violence at Masindi Government Prison has resulted in the death of a convicted prisoner, the Uganda Prisons Service has confirmed.

The deceased, Moses Tuhame, prisoner number MDI/829/2023, was serving time for aggravated defilement.

He died on August 3, 2025, after being violently attacked in the early hours of the morning by another inmate, Anatoli Irumba, a remand prisoner charged with the murder of his own mother.

According to the Uganda Prisons Service spokesperson, Senior Commissioner of Prisons Frank Baine Mayanja, the assault took place at approximately 4:00 AM in the tuberculosis (TB) isolation ward of the facility, where both inmates had been housed.

Tuhame sustained serious injuries during the attack and was rushed to Masindi Hospital, where he succumbed to his wounds a few hours later.

“The police have taken over the matter, and the body will be handed over to the relatives after a postmortem,” said Baine in an official statement released today. “The Uganda Prisons Service extends its deepest condolences to the family of the deceased.”

Details about the motive for the assault remain unclear, but the incident raises renewed concerns about inmate safety, particularly among vulnerable prisoners housed in shared isolation wards.

Authorities say investigations are ongoing.
