As the ruling National Resistance Movement (NRM) conducts its nationwide primaries today, a wave of new contenders is dominating early tallies in several constituencies, challenging long-serving incumbents and potentially redefining the party’s power structure ahead of the 2026 general elections.

In Buwekula South, newcomer Dedan Mubangizi is currently leading against incumbent William Ndori, following a bruising campaign season. In Busiro East, Andrew Kiryowa is edging out veteran politician Hajji Abdul Kiyimba, while in Nakawa West, Anderson Burora has taken a surprise lead over former EALA Speaker Margaret Zziwa.

In a major political showdown, Brig. Gen. Emmanuel Rwashande is leading in Lwemiyaga County, challenging Theodore Ssekikubo, a political heavyweight who has represented the constituency for 25 years.

Meanwhile, in the urban stronghold of Mbarara Municipality, Charity Kibaju is commanding an early lead.

The primaries, conducted through the lining-up method in more than 72,000 villages, began at 10 a.m. and are expected to conclude by 2 p.m., with district-level results anticipated by 4 p.m.
