The Uganda Revenue Authority (URA) has shut down Laventi Lounge & Kitchen, a popular bar located in Najjera, over allegations of tax evasion.
The enforcement action followed a tip-off from the bar’s former owner identified as Mark, who now operates Noni Vie Lounge in Kololo.
According to sources close to the matter, Mark alerted URA after discovering that Laventi was illegally using his Tax Identification Number (TIN) to operate under the radar of the tax authority.
The discovery raised red flags over possible fraud and tax malpractice by the current management of Laventi.
URA officials moved in swiftly to enforce a closure, sealing off the premises pending investigations and recovery of unpaid taxes.
“It’s a serious matter. Someone is running a business using your identity and tax credentials—it’s both criminal and unethical,” said a source familiar with the URA probe.
Laventi, known for hosting premium nightlife events such as Najjera Fest and The Love Scotch Affair, had quickly grown into a major entertainment hotspot in Kira Municipality. The closure is expected to send shockwaves through Kampala’s bar scene, especially among lounges that have changed ownership without updating legal credentials.
This incident raises fresh concerns about businesses that continue to operate under previous owners’ tax profiles, a loophole URA has vowed to crack down on in its ongoing efforts to increase compliance.
URA has yet to issue an official statement on the total tax liabilities or penalties involved, but sources say criminal charges may be pursued depending on the outcome of the investigation.
