After a construction period of just under two years, VCon Construction, a civil engineering firm under the Ruparelia Group, has officially handed over the newly completed Faculty of Engineering to the Islamic University in Uganda (IUIU), marking a major milestone for both the institution and the eastern Uganda region.
The project, valued at $9.1 million (approximately shs 34 billion), includes a modern faculty block and student hostels. It was funded by the Islamic Development Bank (IsDB), which had granted a no-objection letter allowing the contract to proceed.
The contract was signed in 2023 between VCon, represented by Dr. Sudhir Ruparelia, and IUIU Rector, Prof. Ismail Simbwa Gyagenda.
Speaking at the official handover ceremony, Dr. Sudhir expressed his gratitude to the university for trusting VCon with the ambitious project.
“I thank IUIU for awarding VCon the contract to construct the Faculty of Engineering. The project has been delivered in record time. When we began in 2023, this place was a bush. It was cleared, leveled, and we started construction from scratch. Since I am personally invested in education, I have a soft spot for educational facilities. This is a great addition to the Eastern Uganda region, especially the IUIU complex. It will add value to the region and attract more students to the university,” he said.
Prof. Gyagenda, who had earlier emphasized the critical importance of the project, applauded VCon for delivering on its promise.

“This project was long overdue, and it’s very important as science and technology are the drivers of growth in the country and across the world. I thank the contractor for keeping their word and executing the project according to the required standards,” he said.
Initially known for serving Ruparelia Group’s internal real estate and hospitality projects, VCon has steadily evolved into one of Uganda’s leading civil engineering firms.
The company currently boasts the technical capacity to execute more than 10 major projects simultaneously. Some of its notable completed works include the Kingdom Kampala Mall and residential developments like Tagore Living and Bukoto Living and expansion of Kabira Resort.
The successful delivery of the IUIU Faculty of Engineering further cements VCon’s growing reputation as a reliable partner in Uganda’s construction and education development space.
