Mbale City Showdown: New NUP face Mike Nimweze shakes Ground as Voters turn against Ivan Masaba for Arrogance

The political winds in Mbale Northern Division are shifting rapidly, with growing signs that Ivan Masaba, who held the National Unity Platform (NUP) flag in the 2021 elections and became the second in the race  is losing his grip on the electorate.

Once a promising face in the opposition stronghold, Masaba is now facing mounting criticism from his constituents, who accuse him of arrogance and detachment since.

Voters, particularly the youth, feel betrayed by a leader they once rallied behind them.

According to locals, Masaba has not only grown distant but has also failed to remain visible in community matters, sparking frustration and disappointment yet he intends to contest again in the upcoming general elections.

In the wake of this disenchantment, a new political force is emerging: Mike Nimweze, a vibrant and charismatic figure from the heart of Mbale City.

A staunch supporter of NUP, Nimweze mirrors the traits of NUP leader Robert Kyagulanyi Ssentamu (Bobi Wine) — both in background and style.

Just like Bobi Wine, Nimweze is a musician with deep ghetto roots, resonating strongly with the ordinary people. His recent Lumasaba-language hit, “Bobi Wine Weffe”, has become an anthem across Northern Division, celebrating the people’s struggles and aspirations while pledging loyalty to their cause.

The song, produced in the local dialect, has not only boosted his popularity but also reaffirmed his identity as one of their own. Community members say it is this authenticity and accessibility that Masaba now lacks — and that Nimweze brings in abundance.

With the 2026 elections looming, insiders say Masaba is increasingly unsettled.

His camp is reportedly scrambling to contain the growing support behind Nimweze, whose grassroots mobilization is gaining momentum by the day.

As one resident put it, “Nimweze is here with us — in the ghettos, in the music, in the struggle.”

If the current wave continues, Mbale Northern Division may witness a dramatic political reshuffle — with Mike Nimweze at the helm of the change.
