Robert “Bobby” Kabonero, the 24-year-old son of Uganda’s Ambassador Richard Kabonero, has died—three months after he reportedly shot himself in a tragic incident at the family’s residence in Luzira.
Initially reported as a prolonged illness, new revelations indicate that Bobby sustained a gunshot wound from his father’s firearm in what appears to have been an attempted suicide.
A close family source, who requested anonymity due to the sensitivity of the matter, disclosed that the young man locked himself in a bedroom before pulling the trigger.
Bobby was immediately rushed to Nakasero Hospital in Kampala in critical condition and placed in a medically induced coma.
He was later airlifted to Aga Khan Hospital in Nairobi, Kenya, where he remained in intensive care until Friday, May 9, 2025, when he succumbed to his injuries.
Born on July 31, 2000, Bobby was the youngest child of Ambassador Richard and Grace Kabonero.
Known for his radiant smile and reserved personality, he was described as a disciplined and curious young man who had recently begun interning at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Kampala—possibly following in his father’s diplomatic footsteps.
The tragic nature of Bobby’s death has shocked Uganda’s diplomatic and political circles.
Many had followed his recovery with hope, unaware of the circumstances that led to his hospitalization.
His passing has prompted an outpouring of grief, with messages of condolence flowing in from friends, colleagues, and members of the public.
While the exact reasons behind Bobby’s actions remain unclear, a family insider hinted that he may have felt unfairly treated, though no official statement has been released to confirm this.
