The Uganda Bureau of Statistics (UBOS) has launched a six-day training program for 284 enumerators in preparation for the Uganda Aquaculture Census 2025. The training, which began yesterday at Collins Hotel in Mukono, is a critical phase in the nationwide effort to collect comprehensive data on the country’s aquaculture sector.
While officially opening the training, UBOS Acting Executive Director Dr. Vincent Fred Ssenono, speaking on behalf of Executive Director Dr. Chris Mukiza, emphasized the importance of professionalism and discipline among the enumerators. He noted that the census comes at a time of growing demand for data, underscoring the need for high-quality data collection to ensure accurate and timely dissemination of findings.
The training, facilitated by experts who previously completed a Training of Trainers (TOT) session at Jinja Nile Resort, focuses on data collection tools, methodologies, ethical practices, and the use of digital tools. Upon completion, enumerators will take an oath of secrecy before deployment across all aquaculture-active districts in Uganda.
The 2025 Aquaculture Census, a collaborative effort between UBOS and the Ministry of Agriculture, Animal Industry and Fisheries (MAAIF), will gather data on aquaculture farms such as fish ponds, pens, cages, tanks, and small farm reservoirs. It aims to generate reliable statistics on production levels, technologies, socio-economic profiles of operators, and environmental impacts.
UBOS is partnering with local government officials, particularly District Planners and Fisheries Officers, to ensure full coverage of aquaculture establishments. The census findings are expected to inform planning, policy-making, and resource allocation, contributing to food security and economic development.
UBOS has called upon all aquaculture establishments to cooperate with enumerators and provide accurate data, reaffirming its commitment to high-quality statistical production in support of national development.
