UBOS quashes World Bank figures, maintains Uganda has Made it to Middle-income Status

Dr Chris Mukiza, the ED of UBOS

The Uganda Bureau of Statistics (UBOS), in partnership with the Ministry of Gender, Labour and Social Development, has embarked on a nationwide Labour Market Survey aimed at gathering crucial data on employment dynamics. The ongoing exercise targets households in both formal and informal sectors, seeking to provide insights that will inform evidence-based policy and planning.

According to UBOS, the survey is designed to monitor labour market trends, evaluate job creation and destruction, assess labour demand, and understand skill gaps and labour market efficiency. Enumerators are currently on the ground collecting data, which will be used exclusively for statistical purposes. The bureau has assured all stakeholders of the confidentiality of the information being gathered.

In a public notice signed by Executive Director Dr. Chris N. Mukiza, UBOS emphasized the importance of the survey in enhancing decision-making for government and other stakeholders. The bureau urged local government authorities and the general public to cooperate fully by providing accurate information to enumerators.

“This survey will provide the data needed to improve employment planning and address critical gaps in our labour market,” stated Dr. Mukiza.

The bureau has also provided helpline contacts—0772933628 and 0743787189—for any inquiries or clarifications regarding the ongoing survey.

With youth unemployment and skills mismatches among the top socio-economic challenges in Uganda, this labour market survey marks a vital step towards crafting targeted interventions and fostering inclusive economic growth. UBOS calls on all Ugandans to play their part in supporting this important national exercise.
