Uganda’s richest businessman and Chairman of the Ruparelia Group, H.E. Dr. Sudhir Ruparelia, has been awarded a prestigious Lifetime Achievement Award in recognition of his outstanding business success and contributions to job creation.
Dr. Sudhir, who also serves as the Nepalese Consul to Uganda, received the award during the 10th anniversary of the Indian Business Forum in Kampala over the weekend. The event brought together entrepreneurs, investors, and policymakers to discuss strategies for business growth and economic transformation in Uganda.
Deputy Speaker of Parliament Thomas Tayebwa, who presided over the event, commended Dr. Sudhir and the Indian business community for their immense role in Uganda’s economic development. He praised their resilience, innovation, and commitment to reinvesting in Uganda rather than repatriating profits, as seen in some other countries.
In his acceptance speech, Dr. Sudhir expressed gratitude for the recognition and reaffirmed his commitment to fostering business growth in Uganda. He also took a moment to extend his condolences on the passing of Aga Khan, the spiritual leader of the Ismaili Muslim community, who was a major investor in Uganda and beyond.
The Indian community has played a pivotal role in Uganda’s economic progress, with businesses owned by Indian entrepreneurs contributing nearly 65% of the country’s tax revenue. Despite making up only 1% of Uganda’s population, they dominate key sectors such as manufacturing, trade, and finance.
Historically, Indians first arrived in East Africa in the late 19th century as laborers for the construction of the Uganda Railway. Over time, they established thriving businesses, shaping Uganda’s economic landscape alongside Kenya and Tanzania.
Dr. Sudhir’s success is built on a vast business empire that spans multiple industries and significantly contributes to Uganda’s economy. His Ruparelia Group boasts investments in:
✅ Real Estate: Meera Investments, Uganda’s largest property development firm, with prime commercial and residential properties.
✅ Banking & Finance: Former owner of Crane Bank, once among Uganda’s leading commercial banks.
✅ Education: Founder of Delhi Public School International and Kampala Parents’ School, providing top-tier education.
✅ Hospitality: Owner of Speke Resort Munyonyo, Kabira Country Club, and Speke Hotel, redefining Uganda’s tourism industry.
✅ Media & Entertainment: Investments in Speke Apartments and Sanyu FM, Uganda’s first private radio station.
✅ Agriculture: A major investor in Premier Roses, a leading exporter of high-quality roses.
Dr. Sudhir’s visionary leadership and business acumen have not only transformed Uganda’s economy but also cemented his legacy as one of the most influential entrepreneurs in the region.
