NIRA official Sent to Luzira for Soliciting shs.250000 Bribe to Renew nation ID

Taremwa has been remanded

Taremwa Jassy has Monday arraigned before the Buganda Road Court on charges of obtaining money by false pretense.

This followed his arrest by the Anti-Corruption Unit of State House Uganda, working in collaboration with the Criminal Investigations Directorate (CID), the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions (ODPP), and Shield Investors.

According to prosecution, the incident occurred on January 30, 2025, at the National Identification and Registration Authority (NIRA) offices located on Lumumba Avenue in Kampala. Taremwa allegedly defrauded an unsuspecting victim of UGX 250,000 by falsely claiming he could expedite the replacement of a lost National Identity Card within one week. The victim later discovered that Taremwa had no such authority or capability to fulfill his promise.

Authorities confirmed that Taremwa acted with clear intent to defraud, exploiting the victim’s urgency to obtain a replacement ID. He was apprehended after the victim reported the matter, leading to swift investigations and his subsequent arrest.

During the court session, Taremwa faced charges under Uganda’s penal code concerning obtaining money by false pretense, an offense that carries severe penalties upon conviction. The magistrate ordered that he be remanded in custody until February 6, 2025, pending further hearings.

The Anti-Corruption Unit emphasized the importance of public vigilance against such fraudulent schemes, particularly concerning essential government services. They encouraged citizens to report suspicious activities promptly to curb similar incidents.

This case underscores ongoing efforts by Ugandan authorities to tackle corruption and fraud, particularly within public service domains, ensuring that individuals exploiting the system face the full force of the law.
