President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni has hosted a delegation from the White House at State Lodge, Nakasero, to discuss bilateral cooperation and explore areas of mutual interest between Uganda and the United States.
The delegation was accompanied by the Speaker of Parliament, Rt. Hon. Anita Among.
The high-profile visitors included Dr. Rollan Roberts, former U.S. presidential candidate; Mr. David Woodruff, representing the Senate of West Virginia; and Mr. Mark Siljander, former congressman and ambassador.
During the meeting, key discussions revolved around trade, infrastructure development, and fostering deeper economic ties between the two nations.
The delegation assured President Museveni of the U.S. administration’s commitment to strengthening bilateral relations and supporting Africa’s development agenda.
“It’s a good initiative because we need dialogue to agree on a way forward. Sometimes, the lack of discussion has led to scattered positions,” President Museveni stated.
He further emphasized Africa’s mission to achieve social and economic transformation by transitioning from a traditional economy to a money economy.
Highlighting Uganda’s progress, he cited the four main sectors driving growth: commercial agriculture, manufacturing, services, and information and communication technology (ICT).
President Museveni also stressed the importance of regional markets to sustain economic growth, given the limitations of domestic markets.
He revealed that the East African Political Federation is being formulated as part of a larger vision for political integration on the continent.
The President encouraged the delegation to focus on capacity building in areas such as trade, democracy, health, education, infrastructure, and energy.
Dr. Roberts echoed President Museveni’s sentiments, emphasizing that Africa requires fundamental advancements in infrastructure rather than handouts.
“I think you are going to see a marked shift towards this direction, which we both agree is the right way for Africa,” he noted, referring to a shared vision between Uganda and the U.S. administration.
In addition to the productive discussions, the delegation extended an invitation for President Museveni to visit the United States for a working tour later this year, which he graciously accepted.
The meeting signifies a renewed commitment to enhancing Uganda-U.S. relations while aligning development goals for mutual benefit.
