Police in Kampala has shot and killed a notorious robber, Benard Nadumba Kayongo, 25, after he attempted a second robbery at a Fortebet betting branch in Nateete, just hours after successfully robbing another outlet.
The dramatic confrontation took place on the evening of January 6, 2025, along Nateete Masaka Road.
According to Kampala Metropolitan Police (KMP) spokesperson Patrick Onyango, Nadumba and his accomplices, armed with pangas, stormed the first Fortebet branch, where they robbed the establishment of an unspecified amount of cash.
After successfully carrying out the robbery, the group moved on to a second Fortebet branch located at Nateete Business Center, where they attempted to make off with more money.
However, their plans were quickly thwarted after a public tip-off led to a rapid police response.
As the robbers tried to flee the scene upon spotting the approaching officers, a violent confrontation ensued.
Nadumba was fatally shot by police, who were forced to act in self-defense after the suspects, still armed, posed a serious threat.
Nadumba was rushed to Mulago Hospital but was later pronounced dead after succumbing to his injuries.
Police recovered crucial evidence from the scene, including a wallet and a set of keys, and are currently working to identify the remaining five suspects involved in the heists.
“We are continuing our search for the other suspects, and our teams are actively investigating all leads,” said Onyango. “The deceased was part of a larger criminal gang, and we are determined to bring the remaining suspects to justice.”
Authorities are urging anyone with information about the whereabouts of the other suspects to contact the police.
The fatal encounter underscores the increasing danger posed by armed criminal gangs targeting businesses in the city.
Police are continuing their efforts to ensure the safety of Kampala residents and curb such violent crime.
