The Chief of Defence Forces (CDF) of the Uganda People’s Defence Forces (UPDF) has vowed to take swift and decisive action following the tragic suicide of Lt. Amon Ariho, an officer from the Engineering Brigade.
Lt. Ariho, who took his own life on January 1, 2024, left behind a chilling suicide note that outlined grievances against his superiors and frustrations with his working conditions.
In response to this heart-wrenching incident, the CDF Gen. Muhoozi Kainerugaba has assured the public that a thorough investigation will be conducted, and any individuals found responsible will face severe consequences.
This development comes after the UPDF released an official statement acknowledging the suicide and expressing deep regret over the incident.
The statement also emphasized the importance of internal support structures within the military, calling on officers to seek help when faced with challenges.
Despite these existing support systems, the army leadership recognized that Lt. Ariho’s death raises serious concerns about the internal environment and the effectiveness of those structures.
“The UPDF has received a report on a case of suicide by Lt. Ariho of our Engineers Brigade. This is very regrettable given the fact that there are established channels to handle individual and collective challenges in the institution. The CDF assures the public that the UPDF will carry out a thorough investigation and whoever shall be found culpable will be brought to book,” the statement reads by UPDF publicist Brig. Felix Kulayigye.
By promising “tough action,” the CDF has sent a clear message that the UPDF will not allow any officer’s grievances to go unaddressed, especially when they escalate to tragic outcomes like this one. The CDF’s pledge to hold those responsible accountable highlights the army’s commitment to ensuring that similar incidents do not recur.
