Retired UPDF soldier Representing Besigye as Lawyer goes Missing

Major (RTD) Ronald Iduli has been missing since morning

The Uganda People’s Defence Forces (UPDF) has strongly criticized the Uganda Law Society (ULS) over its recent statement alleging the abduction of Major (Rtd) Ronald Iduli, one of Dr. Kizza Besigye’s lawyers. The UPDF expressed disappointment at what it described as a lack of seriousness and objectivity in the claims made by the legal body, urging the ULS to conduct proper investigations before making public declarations.

According to the UPDF, the circumstances surrounding Major (Rtd) Iduli’s arrest have been clarified by Kampala Metropolitan Police spokesperson SP Patrick Onyango. Iduli was reportedly arrested for defaulting on rent for ten months and threatening his landlady with violence. The UPDF noted that such actions are unacceptable and should not be shielded under the guise of political or legal immunity. The force further criticized the ULS for politicizing the situation, calling for professionalism and fairness in handling such cases.

Adding to the gravity of the matter, the UPDF revealed that military stores were found in Iduli’s possession during the police investigation. This, they stated, is a clear violation of laws governing the retention of military uniforms by retired officers. The UPDF emphasized that Iduli, as a former military lawyer, should have been fully aware of these regulations. They pledged full cooperation with the police to ensure that the case is resolved in accordance with the law.

The UPDF condemned Iduli’s conduct, describing it as unbecoming of a retired officer and a lawyer. They asserted that all citizens, regardless of their profession or status, must fulfill their legal and social obligations. The statement urged the public to allow law enforcement agencies to carry out their work without interference, emphasizing the importance of adhering to the rule of law.

In a strongly worded conclusion, the UPDF reaffirmed its respect for the legal profession but cautioned against what it perceives as a trend of politicizing legal issues. The force reiterated its commitment to upholding justice and accountability while calling on all stakeholders to act with integrity and objectivity in the interest of the nation.
