Bank of Uganda dragged to court over Crane Bank collapse

Bank of Uganda

The Bank of Uganda (BoU) has confirmed two recent incidents of fraudulent activities involving the diversion of international payments from their intended beneficiaries. In response to growing public concern, the BoU has launched a comprehensive internal investigation to assess the scale of these incidents and address vulnerabilities in its systems.

In a statement released by Kenneth Egesa, Director of Communications & Public Relations, the BoU emphasized its commitment to institutional integrity and transparency. “We take these matters with the utmost seriousness,” the statement read. The investigation aims to fully understand the extent of the fraud, review internal processes, and implement safeguards to prevent future occurrences.

The BoU is collaborating with key institutions, including the Criminal Investigations Directorate of the Uganda Police Force, the Financial Intelligence Authority, and the Office of the Auditor General, to ensure a thorough probe. Egesa assured the public that once the investigation concludes, the bank will issue a detailed update on the findings and actions taken.

The incidents have sparked a significant public outcry, with calls for enhanced security and accountability within Uganda’s financial institutions. The BoU’s swift acknowledgment and engagement with relevant authorities signal a proactive approach to restoring public trust.
