In an event marking both personal joy and political significance, Davis Akampulira, the Ugandan youth leader who has garnered international recognition and the affectionate nickname “Putin’s African son,” is set to wed this Saturday at the prestigious Speke Resort Munyonyo in Kampala.
The wedding promises to be a distinguished affair, drawing guests from Uganda’s political elite, top religious leaders, international youth leaders, and key diplomatic figures.
Akampulira first made headlines earlier this year when he met Russian President Vladimir Putin during the World Youth Festival in Sochi. His bold advocacy for African issues in global politics left a lasting impression on President Putin, earning him a follow-up private meeting at the Kremlin in Moscow, where Putin referred to him as “my African son.” Akampulira’s discussions with the Russian leader have focused on strengthening Uganda-Russia relations, advocating for youth empowerment, and expanding economic opportunities for young Ugandans, particularly through the Ugandan coffee industry.
The wedding will be attended by Uganda’s former Prime Ministers Amama Mbabazi and Ruhakana Ruganda, alongside the Archbishop and other prominent Ugandan officials. Notably, a delegation of youth leaders from various countries—including China, South Africa, Brazil, Egypt, and North Korea—will also be present, underscoring Akampulira’s broad international connections and his commitment to global youth advocacy.
In addition, the Russian ambassador to Uganda is expected to attend, adding a diplomatic presence that speaks to the strengthened ties between Uganda and Russia, partially fostered by Akampulira’s own diplomatic efforts.
His interactions with Russian leaders have spotlighted Uganda’s rich cultural heritage and resources, notably its coffee, which Akampulira has promoted as the best in the world. This advocacy has led to discussions on increasing coffee exports to Russia, opening potential economic opportunities for Ugandan youth.
The wedding’s venue, Speke Resort Munyonyo, a choice location for significant state and diplomatic events, reflects the importance of the occasion. The event not only celebrates Akampulira’s personal milestone but also serves as a gathering point for Uganda’s next generation of leaders, offering an informal platform for youth-driven discussions on Uganda’s future.
Akampulira’s journey from youth advocacy at Makerere University to an international stage of diplomacy showcases the influence young African leaders are beginning to wield globally. His wedding, attended by prominent figures from Uganda and abroad, is a testament to the unity and respect he commands, symbolizing the power of youth leadership in bridging cultures and fostering international partnerships. As Uganda and the world look on, Akampulira’s wedding exemplifies his dedication to advancing Uganda’s interests and the potential of African youth on the global stage.
