A Uganda People’s Defence Forces (UPDF) soldier, identified as RA/251424 Pte. Isaac Lukwang from the 5 Mountain Battalion in Rusese, Kasese District, caused chaos on Sunday evening after taking a gun from a fellow soldier’s residence and firing indiscriminately.
During the incident, he injured a colleague, RA/251412 Pte. Alebu Joel.
Following the shooting, Lukwang fled the scene, initiating an intense manhunt. Early Monday morning, around 4:00 a.m, he appeared at the UPDF border detachment at Kamukumbi, where he attacked and fatally shot RA/251171 Pte. Kule Solomon, seizing the sentry’s weapon.
The UPDF quickly escalated its search, and by Monday evening, Lukwang was located by a specially dispatched UPDF squad.
When the soldier resisted and fired at the squad, they responded with force, ultimately putting him out of action. Both weapons were recovered and are now in UPDF custody.
“We extend our condolences to the family of the fallen soldier and wish Pte. Alebu a swift recovery,” stated Maj. Bilal Katamba, Public Information Officer for the UPDF Mountain Division and Operation Shujaa.
A Board of Inquiry has been ordered by the UPDF Mountain Division to investigate the circumstances surrounding the incident.
