Shonubi, Musoke & Co. Advocates, one of Uganda’s leading law firms, has publicly distanced itself from allegations of impropriety related to a reported gold scam amounting to Shs5 billion.

The allegations were raised in an article published by the Monitor Newspaper on October 2, 2024, under the headline “How ‘Investor’ lost Shs5b in gold scam,” and further amplified in an NTV News Bulletin under the theme “The Gold Web.”

In a public notice issued on October 4, 2024, the firm categorically denied any involvement in the scandal.

They addressed claims that their partner, Mr. Peter K. Musoke, was adversely mentioned in connection with the fraudulent activities. The firm clarified that Mr. Musoke’s alleged actions, as reported, were conducted without the firm’s knowledge or authorization.

The notice stated, “Shonubi, Musoke & Co. Advocates is not connected to or in any way involved in the alleged engagements, transactions, or matters that are the subject of the said article and NTV News Bulletin.”

The firm further asserted that neither Christian Arndt nor any other individuals implicated in the scandal were ever clients of the firm, and no funds were received or processed through the firm in connection to these individuals or their affiliates.

In response to the media reports, Mr. Musoke acknowledged the allegations and voluntarily stepped aside to personally address the matter. The firm emphasized that his decision to step down was made to ensure a thorough investigation and to maintain the firm’s reputation.

Shonubi, Musoke & Co. Advocates took this opportunity to reiterate their long-standing commitment to ethical legal practice, corporate governance, and anti-corruption measures.

“We are fully compliant with anti-corruption, anti-fraud, good corporate governance, and professional best practices, and condemn any conduct contrary to these values,” the statement read.

The firm expressed regret over any misunderstanding or discomfort caused to their clients and the general public by the media reports. They reassured all stakeholders of their dedication to maintaining the highest standards of integrity.

As investigations continue, the firm remains committed to upholding its reputation as a trusted and ethical legal entity in Uganda.
