The Uganda Tourism Association (UTA), a pivotal entity in the Ugandan tourism sector, has announced the appointment of Muhereza Kyamutetera as its new Chief Executive Officer, starting October 1, 2024. This significant appointment comes at a time when the industry is still navigating the challenges left in the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic.
With over two decades of versatile experience, Kyamutetera brings a robust portfolio of skills in strategy development, business development, and marketing communications to the UTA. His experience spans across numerous sectors, including tourism, financial services, energy, and ICT, amongst others. “I am excited to infuse my professional experience with my passionate love for Destination Uganda,” said Kyamutetera, emphasizing his commitment to advancing Uganda’s tourism.
Yewagnesh Biriggwa, the President of UTA, expressed enthusiasm about the new capabilities Kyamutetera will bring to the table. “UTA is thrilled to have Mr. Kyamutetera onboard at this critical time. We are excited about the fresh perspectives and diverse skill sets he brings to UTA and the industry, where he is no stranger,” she remarked.
The appointment marks one of the key achievements of UTA’s new board, which set ambitious goals for its first 100 days after being elected on June 20, 2024. “The appointment of a CEO is one of the critical milestones our new board set for itself. I thank my fellow board members for working tirelessly to close this key deliverable,” Biriggwa added.
As CEO, Kyamutetera aims to bridge the gap between the private sector, the government, and development partners to enhance the tourism sector’s contribution to the national development agenda. His leadership is expected to drive UTA’s mission to build a professional, competitive, and inclusive tourism sector.
UTA, as the umbrella organization for tourism in Uganda, includes members such as the Association of Uganda Tour Operators, Uganda Safari Guides Association, and the Uganda Hotel Owners’ Association, among others. Collectively, these organizations represent over 2000 enterprises in Uganda’s tourism sector.
Kyamutetera’s leadership comes at a pivotal moment as the sector aims to not only recover but also expand the volume and value of tourism in Uganda, thereby increasing tourism enterprise revenues and household incomes across the country.
This strategic leadership transition is poised to invigorate Uganda’s tourism sector, providing fresh perspectives and renewed energy as the country continues to attract tourists from around the world, drawn to its natural beauty and vibrant cultural heritage.
