Makerere University has formally disassociated itself from claims made by Yusuf Kajura Serunkuma regarding his academic affiliation with the institution.
In a detailed press statement released on 5th September 2024, the university debunked assertions by Serunkuma that he is a political theorist based at Makerere, stating unequivocally that he has no ongoing relationship with the university.
The statement, issued by Ritah Namisango, the Principal Public Relations Officer, explains that Mr. Serunkuma enrolled in a University-funded five-year interdisciplinary PhD program in social studies in 2012.
The program included a master’s degree component, which he successfully completed. However, Serunkuma failed to meet the academic requirements necessary to progress to the PhD stage and was subsequently terminated from the program, following university policy.
“Mr. Serunkuma does not hold a PhD from Makerere University, is not currently affiliated with the University, and has no ongoing relationship with the institution,” the statement read.
This clarification follows Serunkuma’s misrepresentation of his credentials in various public spaces, falsely associating himself with Makerere University. The university sought to correct these inaccuracies to safeguard its reputation and prevent further dissemination of false information.
Makerere University emphasized its commitment to upholding the integrity of its academic programs and institutions by taking firm action against any false representation of its affiliations.
The university’s move to publicly address this issue underscores its zero-tolerance policy towards any form of misrepresentation or academic dishonesty. Media houses and the public have been urged to verify claims of affiliation with the institution to avoid perpetuating misinformation.
For any further inquiries or clarifications, Makerere University has encouraged individuals to reach out to their Public Relations Office.
