DEAD: Kiddu Makubuya

Reports have emerged indicating that former Attorney General and prominent Ugandan lawyer, Kiddu Makubuya, has passed away.

Makubuya’s passing has been confirmed by his daughter Rebecca Nabagala.

The details surrounding his death remain scanty, but his passing marks the end of a significant era in Uganda’s legal and political spheres.

Kiddu Makubuya, who had a distinguished career in law, politics, and academia, had recently been at the center of public concern following false reports of his death on June 3.

These reports were quickly debunked by Nabagala, who confirmed that her father was alive and receiving treatment at Nakasero Hospital. Despite this, the country remained concerned for his well-being.

Burial preparations are underway.

Born on July 30, 1949, Makubuya’s career was marked by several high-profile roles, including serving as Uganda’s Attorney General from 2005 to 2011 and later as the Minister for General Duties in the Office of the Prime Minister.

His tenure in government was not without controversy; in 2012, he resigned amid allegations of misappropriation of government funds.

In addition to his political career, Makubuya made substantial contributions to Uganda’s legal framework and academic landscape. He was instrumental in drafting the 1995 Constitution of Uganda as a member of the Uganda Constitutional Commission and served as a director at the Uganda Human Rights and Peace Center.

His academic journey included earning a First Class Honors Bachelor of Laws degree from Makerere University and advanced degrees from Yale Law School.

The passing of Kiddu Makubuya leaves a void in the legal and political community. His contributions to the nation will be remembered by those who admired his work and dedication to Uganda’s development. Further details on his passing and arrangements for his final rites are expected to be released in due course.
