The nation continues to mourn the loss of Tamale Mirundi, one of Uganda’s most influential and outspoken media personalities, who passed away on Tuesday night, August 13, 2024.
The news of his death has evoked widespread grief, with tributes pouring in from various corners of the country.
The latest to join the chorus of mourners is General Muhoozi Kainerugaba, the Chairman of the Patriotic League of Uganda (PLU), a movement that Mirundi ardently supported.
Muhoozi is also the current Chief of Defence Forces in Uganda.
Taking to X (formerly Twitter), General Muhoozi expressed his sorrow over the loss of his close friend and colleague of over two decades. “I am deeply saddened to hear of the passing of my friend and brother Tamale Mirundi. We were friends and colleagues for over 20 years. He was a bold and fearless person who always fought for the truth. Uganda has lost a patriot who loved his country. May his soul rest in peace,” he posted.
Mirundi, who had been battling a serious illness for several weeks, was being treated at Kisubi Hospital after initially resisting hospital care due to his aversion to such settings.
His son, Tamale Mirundi Junior, had earlier shared that his father was in critical condition, being tube-fed and unable to speak since his admission to the ICU. Despite the dedicated efforts of his family and medical team, Mirundi succumbed to his illness, leaving the nation in mourning.
Mirundi’s death marks a significant moment in Ugandan media and politics. Known for his fearless commentary and unwavering commitment to speaking his mind, Mirundi was both a revered and controversial figure. His time as President Yoweri Museveni’s press secretary and subsequent role as a media commentator made him a household name, with a reputation for challenging the status quo.
General Muhoozi’s tribute highlights the depth of their relationship and Mirundi’s role as a patriot who loved his country. The PLU, under Muhoozi’s leadership, has been one of the most vocal in honoring Mirundi’s legacy, recognizing his contributions to the political and media landscape of Uganda.
As Uganda mourns the loss of a media giant, preparations for Mirundi’s funeral are underway, with details expected to be announced by his family soon. He is survived by his wife, children, and a legacy of bold journalism that will continue to influence the nation for years to come.
