Tamale Mirundi, one of Uganda’s most outspoken and influential media personalities, passed away on Tuesday night, August 13, 2024, after a prolonged illness.
The news was confirmed by his close friend Frank Gashumba, a prominent figure in the Patriotic League of Uganda (PLU) and the movement’s vice chairman.
Mirundi was a staunch supporter of the PLU, led by General Muhoozi Kainerugaba.
Mirundi, who had been battling severe health complications for several weeks, was admitted to the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) at Kisubi Hospital after initially being treated at home. His son, Tamale Mirundi Junior, had shared with the media that his father was being tube-fed and had not spoken since his admission to the ICU. Despite the efforts of his family and medical team, his condition deteriorated, leading to his passing.
Known for his sharp wit and unfiltered commentary, Tamale Mirundi was a prominent voice in Ugandan media for decades. He served as the press secretary to President Yoweri Museveni for several years before becoming a regular commentator on various media platforms. His candid opinions and fearless approach to political analysis earned him a large following, as well as a fair share of controversies.
The news of his death has sent shockwaves across the nation. Social media platforms are flooded with tributes from both ordinary citizens and high-profile figures.
Balaam Barugahara, the Minister of State for Youth and Children Affairs, who visited Mirundi during his illness, expressed his condolences on X (formerly Twitter), acknowledging Mirundi’s contributions to the media and his unwavering support for the PLU.
“We thank God for granting us the time we had with Mzee Tamale Mirundi. His voice will be greatly missed in our national discourse,” Barugahara said. “On behalf of the PLU and our Chairman/CDF Gen Muhoozi Kainerugaba, we extend our deepest sympathies to his family.”
Mirundi’s passing marks the end of an era in Ugandan media. As the nation mourns, discussions on how his legacy will be preserved are beginning to surface. Plans for his funeral and other commemorative events are expected to be announced soon by his family.
He is survived by his wife, children, and a legacy of fearless journalism that will continue to influence Uganda’s media landscape for years to come.
