Mbarara woman Posing as Bishop Bakyenga’s heir ‘steals’ Shs.1.5b in Bogus property Deal

Annah Asiimwe who claims to be Late Bakyenga's heir

In a shocking turn of events, Annah Asiimwe, a resident of Kakooba Division in Mbarara City, has been arraigned before the Chief Magistrates Court on charges of fraudulently obtaining UGX 1.5 billion.

The 30-year-old, who posed as the biological daughter of the Late Bishop Paul Bakyenga, is facing multiple charges, including obtaining money by false pretenses, forgery, and uttering false documents.

Between 2020 and 2022, Asiimwe deceived Jordan Zuwa Ssendegeya, convincing him that she could transfer properties allegedly belonging to her deceased father, Bishop Bakyenga, into his name.

By presenting herself as the rightful heir, she managed to extract a staggering sum of UGX 1.5 billion from her victim.

This elaborate scheme included not only false claims but also forged documents to support her fraudulent activities.

The State House Anti-Corruption Unit, in collaboration with the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) and the Office of the Director of Public Prosecution (ODPP), has been rigorously investigating the case.

Their efforts culminated in Asiimwe’s arrest and subsequent arraignment.

The charges against Asiimwe are serious and multifaceted.

The first count involves obtaining money by false pretenses, a violation of Section 305 of the Penal Code Act.

This charge pertains to the UGX 1.5 billion she deceitfully acquired from Ssendegeya Zuwa Jordan.

The second count, forgery, contrary to Section 342 of the Penal Code Act, outlines how Asiimwe created a fraudulent letter of security confirmation dated January 16, 2023.

This document was purportedly signed by Ms. R. Mukami Kariuki, the World Bank Group Country Manager, adding a veneer of legitimacy to her deceitful claims.

The third count, uttering a false document, under Section 351 of the Penal Code Act, highlights Asiimwe’s attempt to present the forged letter as authentic, further entrenching her fraudulent narrative.

The news of Asiimwe’s arrest has sent ripples through the Mbarara community.

Residents are stunned that someone could exploit the revered name of the Late Bishop Paul Bakyenga, a respected figure in the community, for personal gain.

Bishop Bakyenga’s legacy is one of integrity and devotion to the church, making these allegations all the more disturbing.

Local leaders and community members have expressed their dismay and called for justice to be served swiftly. “It’s a betrayal of trust and an exploitation of people’s goodwill,” said a community leader who preferred to remain anonymous. “Such actions tarnish the reputation of individuals who have contributed positively to society.”

During her court appearance, Asiimwe Annah was formally charged and subsequently remanded until July 9, 2024. This decision was made to allow further investigations and to ensure that all aspects of the case are thoroughly examined.

The Chief Magistrates Court emphasized the importance of a fair trial, ensuring that Asiimwe has the opportunity to respond to the charges against her. Meanwhile, the State House Anti-Corruption Unit continues to work diligently to uncover any additional evidence that could shed more light on this intricate case.
