Remembering Magdalena Kikwangire: The uncelebrated Martyr of Ibanda

Magdalena Kikwangire was executed at Kalivario hill in Kagongo, Ibanda

In honor of Uganda’s Martyrs Day on June 3rd, we pay tribute to the remarkable life and tragic death of Magdalena Kikwangire, affectionately known as “Mangada.” Her story serves as a poignant reminder of faith, courage, and sacrifice amidst adversity.

Early Life:

Magdalena was born in Nyinaeibare cell in Bisheshe Division, within present-day Ibanda municipality district, in 1922. Baptized on November 18, 1922, she was raised by her parents, Agostino Kasharura and Kandida Kabajungu, alongside her sister Maria Bagaine. Magdalena’s upbringing instilled in her a deep sense of faith and devotion to God, which would shape her life’s journey.

Education Background:

Her educational journey began at Ekigango Kyabaronde in Ibanda Parish. She later pursued primary education at Nyamitanga in Mbarara, where she actively participated in the Legion of Mother Mary under Fr. Mischler’s guidance. Magdalena’s thirst for knowledge led her to schools in Virika Tooro, including a Primary Teachers College and Nyamitanga Vernacular College.

Life as a Teacher:

Magdalena embarked on her teaching career at St. Theresa Primary in Kagongo in 1948, later transferring to Kayazi in Kitagwenda before returning to St. Theresa in 1950. She taught diligently, imparting not only knowledge but also values of faith and integrity to her students.

Daily Life:

A devout communicant, Magdalena’s faith was evident in her daily life. She had a profound devotion to the Blessed Virgin Mary, prayed the rosary diligently, and actively participated in church activities. Known for her wise counsel, she offered guidance to all who sought her advice, embodying the principles of faith, hope, and charity.

Tragic Demise:

Magdalena’s life took a tragic turn when she became the target of Antonio Barugahare and his accomplices’ heinous intentions. Despite her unwavering commitment to chastity and her refusal to succumb to their demands, she met a cruel fate at their hands on the night of January 14, 1956.

Her assailants brutally attacked her and ultimately crucified her on a tree at Kalivario in Rukokoma Kagongo.

Legacy:

News of Magdalena’s death sent shockwaves through the community, prompting a widespread search. Though her life was cut short, her legacy lives on as a testament to faith and resilience. Her body, untouched by decay, astonished those who discovered it. The perpetrators were brought to justice, and Magdalena was laid to rest at Nyamitanga, where her memory continues to inspire devotion and pilgrimage.

Memorial Site:

In 1975, a memorial site was erected at the location of Magdalena’s ordeal, serving as a reminder of her unwavering faith and sacrifice. Today, we honor Magdalena Kikwangire, a true Christian martyr whose life continues to inspire faith and devotion in the hearts of many.

As Uganda commemorates Martyrs Day, let us remember and celebrate the life of Magdalena Kikwangire, an unsung hero of Ibanda whose courage and faith will never be forgotten.
