In a decisive move to bolster national security, Major General Leopold Kyanda, Joint Chief of Staff, underscores the critical significance of safeguarding vital assets and strategic installations. The establishment of the Office of the Coordinator National Vital Assets and Strategic Installations, emphasized by Maj Gen Kyanda, is seen as a pivotal step in addressing potential threats to the nation.
Speaking at the assumption of office by Maj Gen Moses Rwakitarate at the Ministry of Defence and Veteran Affairs Headquarters in Mbuya, Maj Gen Kyanda highlighted the urgency for comprehensive protection of key national assets. The new office aligns with the UPDF Establishment 2021, recently launched by the President of Uganda and Commander-in-Chief.
Maj Gen Kyanda, noting the UPDF’s role as the vanguard of the revolution, stressed the direct linkage between the Office Coordinator National Vital Assets and Strategic Installations and the government. He expressed confidence in a UPDF General managing this crucial office, emphasizing coordination’s dual role in bridging government and private sector interests.
Describing the importance of coordination, Maj Gen Kyanda explained, “Maj Gen Rwakitarate will lead a team that will sort out the grey areas to avoid duplication. They will take stock of all vital assets and installations the country has and plan better for their security.”
Addressing Maj Gen Rwakitarate, Maj Gen Kyanda urged a focus on national security implications for both the government and private sector, citing upcoming developments like the oil resource that demand a thorough understanding and strategic handling.
Maj Gen Kyanda emphasized the need for vigilance against potential disruptions such as strikes, urging teamwork and regular meetings to ensure effective delivery by the new office. The responsibilities of the Coordinator National Vital Assets and Strategic Installations encompass crucial sectors like Uganda Revenue Authority, National Identification Registration Authority, Uganda Wildlife Authority, infrastructure elements, Oil and Gas installations, Electricity Generation, and health facilities, among others.
The function was attended by notable figures including Brig Gen Godwin Karugaba, Brig Gen James Kinalwa, Brig Gen Abdul Rugumayo, and senior officers from various government bodies.
