In a gripping twist in the Henry Katanga murder case, Nakawa Chief Magistrate has issued an arrest warrant for Martha Nkwanzi, daughter of Molly Katanga, following their repeated failure to appear in court.
The developments unfolded on Monday morning, marking a significant episode in the ongoing legal proceedings.
Martha and Molly are facing charges related to the murder of Henry Katanga, an incident that occurred on November 2. Since their initial charges on November 21, the mother-daughter duo had consistently missed court hearings, raising concerns and now culminating in a warrant for Martha’s arrest.
Martha’s lawyers have cited her recent childbirth and subsequent medical treatment as the reason for her non-appearance, while Molly has undergone multiple surgeries.
Despite these claims, the court issued a warrant for Martha’s arrest due to her failure to comply with the scheduled court appearances.
The court had previously ordered Martha and Molly to appear on January 8.
Prosecution, noting their absence, requested the court to issue an arrest warrant for Martha, who is reportedly receiving treatment at home, not in a hospital.
Molly’s lawyers presented a health report from experts at the Ministry of Health, indicating that she is still in the process of recovery after undergoing five surgeries at IHK since her admission on November 2.
The court granted Molly more time for recovery.
Martha’s arrest warrant underscores the gravity of the charges against her and the legal consequences tied to non-compliance with court appearances.
The absence of both suspects raises questions about the progress of the investigation and potential implications for the Katanga murder case.
The warrant triggered concern among Martha’s legal team, prompting a request for time to consult with her doctors and see if she could be presented to Court later in the afternoon.
However, the judge declined, stating that the matter is now in the hands of the police, implying that Martha could be arrested on sight.
In a related development, three additional suspects, including Patricia Kakwanza, the eldest daughter, Dr. Charles Otai, and shamba boy George Amanyire, were remanded to Luzira until January 22. Their bail application is set for a hearing on that date.
The murder of Henry Katanga on November 2 in Mbuya, Kampala, following a domestic dispute with his wife Molly Katanga, remains shrouded in mystery. Investigations continue into the motive behind the tragic incident.
