Army warns Ugandans against Questioning how Bugingo survived Assassination Attempt

UPDF Col. Mwesigye at pastor Bugingo's church

In a stern message issued this Sunday, Col Fred Mwesigwa, the head of UPDF operations in Kampala Metropolitan, has issued a warning to the public, urging them to refrain from engaging in speculative discussions surrounding the miraculous survival of Pastor Alloysius Bugingo after an apparent assassination attempt.

The targeted shooting, which occurred on the night of January 2, left Bugingo’s bodyguard, Cpl Richard Muhumuza, dead. The assailant fired 13 bullets at Bugingo’s SUV, intercepting him along Namungona in Zone 2, Kasubi Rubaga Division, at Buwalakata Junction along National Housing Road.

Following the incident, Bugingo drove to Mulago Referral Hospital, where Cpl Muhumuza, an elite commando of Special Forces Command (SFC), was pronounced dead. Despite being examined and later discharged with no severe injuries, Bugingo’s remarkable escape has sparked growing public curiosity and inquiries on various social media platforms.

Addressing the congregation at Bugingo’s church- Canaan, Col Mwesigye reassured them of security while emphasizing the importance of refraining from baseless speculation. He urged the public to allow relevant authorities to conduct a thorough investigation into the incident. With nearly 40 years of service in the UPDF, Mwesigye urged those fueling assassination talk to “stay in their lane” and let officials do their work.

Acknowledging the public’s interest, Mwesigye stressed the need for patience and respect for the ongoing investigative process. The incident has garnered widespread attention, prompting questions about the factors contributing to Bugingo’s survival.

The Army’s directive underscores a commitment to maintaining order and ensuring that released information aligns with the ongoing investigation.

Mwesigye disclosed that the UPDF has secured Bugingo’s properties at the church, home, and workplace in Rubaga. In a related development, the police announced a reward of shs 20 million for information about the attackers who used a gun linked to the murder of Vlogger Isma Tusubira, also known as Olaxes. The unfolding situation suggests a complex intersection of security, public curiosity, and the ongoing investigation.
