Ugandan Speaker of Parliament, Rt Hon Anita Annet Among will hold private meeting with Pope Francis at the Vatican.

According to a “Note Verbale” by the Apostolic Nunciature in the Federal Republic of German, the office is honored to transmit the message of the Holy See that His Holiness Pope Francis “has granted a Private Audience to the Rt Hon. Among Anita Annet, Speaker of the Parliament of Uganda, on Friday Morning, 25th August 2023.”

The letter further reads that after the Papal audience, the Rt Hon. Among, as per the Protocol practice, will be received by His Eminence Pietro Cardinal Parolin, Secretary of State of His Holiness.

“The Apostolic Nunciature wishes to fulfill its duty to convey the following indications to the Embassy of the Republic of Uganda to the Holy See in connection with the abovementioned Official Visit to the Vatican.”

The visit comes at a time when Parliament of Uganda just passed the anti Homosexuality Act which was later assented to by the President. The bill saw the imposition of tough sanctions against the Speaker of Parliament.

This will be Speaker Among’s third visit to His Holiness the Pope after the first and second in August last year and in 2021.

“The Apostolic Nunciature wishes to fulfill its duty to convey the following indications to the Embassy of the Republic of Uganda to the Holy See in connection with the above mentioned official visit to the Vatican,” the letter further reads.
