Exclusive: Cabinet endorses Museveni for 2026

President Museveni was endorsed by cabinet on Monday

The cabinet of Uganda sitting on Monday, 28th November resolved to rally behind President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni as the NRM candidate in the next Presidential elections.

A minister who attended the meeting at State House Entebbe, chaired by the Vice President said the proposal was engineered by Hon Jessica Alupo.

“The President didn’t attend cabinet,” said the minister who asked to remain unnamed for fear of reprimand for revealing cabinet secrets.

It remains unknown whether it is coincidental that Museveni is never available when controversial proposals are passed by cabinet.

This website has learnt that the Alupo, Museveni’s deputy said the President has proved that he is still fit to run the country and therefore deserves to be supported in the coming polls.

Unlike previously, the NRM bigwigs have this time began early campaigns for President prompting queries from the public if there is an existing threat within the NRM that threatens Museveni’s hold onto power.

The motion by the Vice President was backed by all the ministers.

The development comes after a number of government officials and NRM stalwarts have staged crusades to endorse Museveni for 2026.

The Vice President Major Jessica Alupo together with Internal Affairs Minister Maj Gen. Kahinda Otafiire, and Defence Minister, Vincent Ssempijja were among the leaders who signed an endorsement for President Yoweri Museveni’s 2026 candidature two months ago.

Justice Minister Norbert Mao who attended the same occasion in Mitooma district disclosed that he was given the assignment to organize a consensus for transition in Uganda, and asked the youth to support him in the assignment which was entrusted to him by the President.

He said the transition will be in three phases, consensus, endorsement, and implementation of what will be agreed upon, hoping that by 2031, there will be a new Uganda.

At the same function, the youth of Mitooma district endorsed President Yoweri Museveni to contest in the 2026 general elections.

Since a number of NRM factions have separately endorsed Museveni as their candidate in 2026.
