A former Ugandan athlete Musa Kimuli is nursing severe head injuries in a US hospital following a fatal road accident in which a fellow Ugandan died on the spot.
Elvis Kikuba, a 21-year old student at Sinclair College in Dayton, Ohio, was pronounced dead at arrival at Miami Valley hospital, according to Ohio State Highway Springfield Post.
The deceased is a former student of Ndejje high School in Bombo, Luwero district.
Kikuba’s death was at the scene of three crashes early Wednesday last week.
Kikuba driving a Ford Fusion, had stopped as emergency response was trying to help victims of two crashes that had happened at the same spot moments earlier, when a Volvo van hit the car they were travelling in with Kimuli pushing it between the guardrail and one of the vehicles in the earlier crash.
The impact ejected Kimuli who was rushed to Mercy Health Springfield Regional Hospital, unconscious.
“The last thing I remember is that we stopped at an accident scene as police were trying to clear the place. The next thing I saw was I was lying in hospital,” Kimuli, 33, narrated on phone from his hospital bed.
“I think I only survived because I had not fastened my seat belt, but of course Allah is the most Merciful,” Kimuli, who appeared to have been devastated by the young man’s death, could be heard sobbing.
Kimuli has been in the habit of helping Ugandans, especially athletes, pursue education careers in the US, the latest being U20 national soccer team and SC Villa player Saddam Maseruka.
Kimuli, a former Makerere University student and athlete, was recently in Uganda on holiday and only returned to the US on November 2.
