UPC’s Ebil maintains NRM supported his EALA bid but MPs Exercised their Right

Uganda People’s Congress (UPC) Secretary General, Fred Ebil Ebil is not bitter with NRM after he lost East African Legislative Assembly (EALA) election neither is he looking for compensation from the ruling party.
Ebil is also not cash-strapped and therefore looking for a State appointment to earn salary, as some media reports have previously suggested.
The UPC political party which has ever been in government twice sometime back announced its decision to work closely with the regime because both establishments share a lot in common particularly governance and democratic values.
UPC is led by Jimmy Akena, the son to Late Milton Obote who contributed to Uganda’s post-independence growth.
In the understanding, the regime agreed to support and also incorporate some UPC members into assuming powerful position in government.
For example, Akena’s wife Hon Betty Amongi is the Minister of Gender having served as Land Minister in the previous cabinet.
In last week’s EALA elections, Mr Ebil who had contested lost but was heavily supported by NRM party.
However, MPs who are the electorate in this particular exercise voted otherwise.
And to Ebil, his loss doesn’t curtail the relationship with NRM because the lawmakers did fully exercise their right in choosing the candidates of their choice.
UPC insists the goal is to continue working with NRM and ultimately take power.
